What is Health and Safety Awareness Training?
To maintain a safe work environment, it is essential that all employees are familiar with their rights and responsibilities in the workplace. Workers must also be aware of the fact that their employer is bound by law to follow a set of regulations that promote safety in any establishment.
This course is geared towards workers and aims to familiarize them with safety regulations and protocols that they and their supervisors must observe. In addition, topics such as common on-the-job hazards are covered in order to ensure employees are better prepared for the dangers associated with their line of work.
Who Is Responsible for Health and Safety Awareness Training?
In all Canadian jurisdictions, it is the employer’s responsibility to ensure a safe work environment for all employees. In Ontario, this also includes the implementation of appropriate Health & Safety training for all workers covered under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Employees, on the other hand, are required to take part in the course and dedicate some time to understanding the topics discussed therein. In addition, employees looking to improve their CVs prior to an interview can also acquire and complete this training program independently.
What Do You Need to Learn?
To obtain this safety certificate, you must demonstrate your understanding of the rights and responsibilities of a worker, on the one hand, and of the duties of supervisors and employers, on the other. You must also be able to identify common work hazards and propose a broad set of safety measures that you can apply in order to avoid them.
How Long Is the Certificate Valid?
Due to the importance of safety in the workplace, it is recommended that employees re-take this course on a yearly basis. In addition, workers who change jobs or employers may be required to re-take this course or to provide proof that they have previously completed it.
What Other Courses Should I Take?
Health & Safety Awareness is often paired with WHMIS 2015, NORM, Electrical Safety and Awareness, and/or Fire Safety.
