Energy - An Industry That Could Be Fatal

Many tend to underestimate the safety benchmarks of the energy industry. Statistics indicate that, when taken as a whole, the energy sector’s total recordable injury rate (TRIR) is higher than the minimum required for an OHS inspection.

What’s more, researchers in the field of safety argue that the real number of work-related accidents is actually higher than reported. The public safety legislation currently in place indicates that inspections must be performed on a monthly basis, so that all aspects of the work environment is inspected at least once per year.

At present, the fatality rate per 100,000 employees in most Canadian regions far exceeds the injury rate: 7.7 deaths to 2.19 injuries in Saskatchewan, for instance. For this reason, the number of inspections conducted by the Canadian Public Safety authority has been on the rise since 2015. To ensure that employers provide their due diligence in terms of health and safety standards, there are now over 1,800 inspections performed on a yearly basis.

However, the best way to tackle the growing trend of accidents in energy is through appropriate safety courses and comprehensive training for employees. Below, you will find a detailed list of the safety courses required for the most common jobs in the energy sector.
