Logging, Forestry - An Industry That Could Be Fatal

According to a 2018 report by Finder Canada, Logging & Forestry is currently the most dangerous industry to work in. The statement is backed up by statistics from the Association of Workers’ Compensation Boards of Canada, whose research for 2017 found over 1,300 work-related injuries and 13 fatalities throughout the sector.

While the numbers might seem small compared to industries such as Manufacturing, they are actually alarmingly high when considered against the total number of workers in Logging & Forestry. Only 48,100 people were employed in this sector in 2017, which means that almost 3% of them were injured or killed (vs 1.9% in Manufacturing).

The report also found that most accidents in Logging & Forestry resulted from the incorrect use of tools and machinery, from lack of adequate protective equipment, as well as from burns. As such, one way to make this industry a safer place in the future includes more thorough safety training for all employees and especially for those workers who are hired by small companies and operations.

Below, you will find a list of the most common jobs in Logging & Forestry, each with a selection of safety courses that are most likely to improve both your CV and your ability to avoid work-related injuries.
