Seismic - An Industry That Could Be Fatal

Workers in the Seismic industry play a vital role in the on- and off-shore exploration of oil & gas. However, especially in the case of drillers, riggers, blasters, and other data acquisition workers, the information they help provide can come at the cost of grave injury and even fatality.

According to the Association of Workers’ Compensation Board of Canada, in 2017, the number of work-related accidents in Mining, Quarrying, and Oil Wells was fairly low as compared to other fields. For instance, more than 33,000 injuries were reported in Manufacturing, whereas industries that incorporate Seismic jobs recorded just over 2,000. What these numbers don’t say is that the latter industries put together employed six times fewer workers than the former during the same year.

When considered relatively to the total number of workers, the frequency of accidents and fatalities in the Seismic-related sectors remains alarmingly high. Although new technologies may curb this trend in the future, appropriate safety training for all Seismic employees continues to be the most effective means to ensure fewer accidents in the workplace.
